The Mt. Timpoong-Hibok-Hibok National Park is composed of two mountains: Mt. Timpoong and Mt. Hibok-Hibok, which is an active volcano located in the northwest area of the island. It is one of the important Key Biodiversity Areas of the Philippines. It is rich in species diversity, and level of endemism, as this Heritage Park is the habitat of Camiguin’s endemic birds and trees.

Mts. Timpoong-Hibok-Hibok Natural Monument has unique ecotourism characteristics being the source of well-known waterfalls, cold springs, hot springs, and soda waters. It serves as watershed for the whole island of Camiguin.

Unique Flora: Bagtikan (Parashorea maalanonan), Nato (Palaqium luzoniense), Bitanghol (Callophyllum blancoi), Sagimsim (Syzygium brevistylum), Kalingag (Cinnamomum mercadoi), and Duguan (Myristica philippinensis)

Unique Fauna: Camiguin forest rat (Bullimus gamay), Camiguin forest mouse (Apomys camiguinensis), Camiguin Hanging Parrots (Loriculus camiguinensis), Camiguin hawk owl (Atrophaneura s. semperi),Camiguin Narrow-mouthed Frog (Oreophryne nana), Hawk Owl (Ninox leventisi), Philippine Hanging Parakeet.

Habitat Types:

The natural monument has five (5) major habitats:

  • Grassland/brushland, upland wetland/freshwater habitat type – found along areas constantly covered with water such as lakes, rivers, and perennial creeks
  • Mossy forest type – includes various waterfalls, and can be found at Binabag, Kabawan and Kamamis Hills at an elevation of 900 meters above sea level
  • Dipterocarp forest type – located at the residual stands of the protected area just below the mossy type, and is interspersed with the open/brushland habitat type
  • Open brushland habitat type – located in the municipality of Mambajao, just above Ardent Spring
  • Lowered timber areas – found in the municipalities of Mahinog and Catarman

This declared protected natural monument has numerous potential areas for ecotourism, public viewing, and trekking, especially the multiple-use zone (e.g. Mt. Hibok-Hibok volcano with its Aron Crater Lake, Binangawan falls in Bonbon Sagay,and Tuasan Falls in Mainit, Catarman).Some of the natural features of this Heritage Parkhave not been disturbed by human activities.

The monument is suitable for scientific studies that could help in designing plans and strategies in terms of conserving and protecting the natural resources inside the protected area.
