Nam Poui National Protected Area

Nam Poui National Protected Area, located in Xayaburi Province, is one of the largest national protected areas in Lao PDR. The area comprises mostly mountainous areas, generally between 400 metres to 2,000 metres above sea level, which support evergreen, mixed deciduous and upper dry dipterocarp forests. It is one of the top five national protected areas of the country that support high biodiversity. It has various habitat types that are particularly important for supporting wide-ranging, large mammal species and some bird species

Location
Located in Northwestern Lao PDR just along the west bank of the Mekong River, and the Road A4 from Paklay to Xayabouri. The participating districts are Phiang District which has the largest area (99,424 hectares), followed by Thongmixay (83,745 hectares) and Paklay District (8,030 hectares). The northern boundary follows the watershed of the Nam Song and abuts the Nam Tan Provincial Protection Forest. The eastern border follows the base of an escarpment for 60 kilometres from B. Nam Poui in the north to the Thai border at B. Houey Khao in the south.

Unique Flora

Pterocarpus indicus, Afzelia xylocarpa, Mai Khaphi, Mai Khaen, Mai Deng, Mai Champa, Mai Champi, and Mai Taehor, Mai Dou Lai, Mai Dou Khang, Mai Dou Kalen, and Mai Dou Deng, Mai Dou Lai (Pterocarpus sp.), Mai Deng (Xylia xylocarpa), May Khaen heua (Hopea odorata), Mai Yom, Mai Yang, Mai Teng, Mai Sor, Mai Sikhai,  and Mai Ketsana.

Unique Fauna

There are at least 10 key species of birds, 15 key species of mammals and 7 key species of reptiles which warrant special management attention. The key large and medium mammals were reported and some recently recorded by camera trapping are Asian Elephant, Tiger, Gaur, White-handed Gibbon, Clouded Leopard, Asiatic Black Bear, Sun Bear, Dhole, Grey Leaf Monkey, Southern Serow, Otter sp., Binturong, Great Hog badger, Stump-tailed Macaque, Sambar, Chinese Pangolin, Sunda Pangolin, Slow Loris and Golden Jackal. Also, a number of bird and herp species are considered key species of the park. Green peafowl, Pheasants and Peacocks were reported.
