Background

Phase II of the project, “Improving Biodiversity Conservation of Wetlands and Migratory Waterbirds in the ASEAN Region,” builds on the first phase’s efforts to strengthen the conservation and management of critical wetland habitats for migratory waterbirds. Approved by JAIF on 29 September 2023, this two-year project focuses on sustaining the ASEAN Flyway Network as well as enhancing capacities for waterbird and wetland monitoring at both regional and national levels, with the National Parks Board of Singapore serving as the technical lead.

Objectives

The project focused on the following objectives:
Sustain a well-functioning ASEAN Flyway Network
Enhancing capacities on waterbird and wetland monitoring at both regional and national levels

COMPONENTS

1. Knowledge Sharing and Networking
  • Members of the AFN reviewed the notable outcomes and recommendations of Phase I. 
  • Activities:

                 a.   Regional network meeting back-to-back with the regional forum on waterbird survey and monitoring and monitoring and evaluation workshop

                 b. Production of the Phase I survey report and associated knowledge products.

2. Capacity Building
  • Enhanced knowledge and skills of national focal points and flyway site managers and staff through regional and national capacity building initiatives. 
  • Activities:

                   a. Regional capacity building workshop on wetland and migratory waterbird management 

                   b. Support for national-level capacity-building workshops
