Nam Ha National Protected Area

This is the fourth largest national protected area in the country and home to more than 20 ethnic groups. The Nam Ha National Protected Area is an extremely important watershed, and harbours a high population of birds and mammals: ranks third for birds and fifth for large mammals out of 20 protected areas in the country.

Apart from this, the said protected area ranks third in the national management priority index based on biodiversity and watershed values, ecotourism potential, and level of pressure on the site.

Unique Flora: Aquilaria trees; cardamom; Jewel orchid; Cinnamomum sp.; bamboos and rattans; dipterocap trees; Castanopsis stands

Unique Fauna: Clouded leopard; leopard; tiger; gaur; muntjac, Asian elephants; black-cheeked gibbon; northern pigtail;rhesus macaques; great flocks of butterflies including the leaf butterfly (Kallima sp.); Papilio and Graphium species; Indian purple emperor (Mimathyma ambica); silver pheasant (Lophurany cthemera); Blythe’s kingfisher; great hornbill (Buceros bicornis); green peacock (Pavo muticus).

 

Lake Agco (The Blue Lake) and Lake Venado can be found in the park, which are famous campsites for mountaineers and a stopover towards the peak. Lakes Maag and Jordan are found in the summit.

The boasts of scenic waterfalls (Tudaya, Mabbu, and Tagibaka) and hot springs.

There are seven indigenous groups living at the lower slopes of the mountain. These groups consider the mountain as sacred ground and their ancestral domain.

Other features of the park are orchid farms and gardens, Buddhist and To temples, and hiking trails.
