YEREVAN, Armenia – Highlighting the collective voice and commitment of ASEAN Member States (AMS) to work together to strengthen the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) through the ASEAN Biodiversity Plan (ABP), the ASEAN Joint Statement (AJS) was read during the opening plenary of the 17th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 17).
Delivering the AJS as this year’s ASEAN Chair, the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary for Legal, Organizational Transformation and Human Resources Ernesto D. Adobo, Jr., shared the region’s resolve to enhance the means of implementing the KMGBF through financial resources, capacity building, technology transfer, and technical and scientific cooperation, as well as enhanced regional and international cooperation.
According to Jerome L. Montemayor, executive director of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), “The AJS reflects ASEAN’s determination and readiness to advance multilateral cooperation and collective action towards the shared goal of living in harmony with nature.”
In addition, the AJS also recognised the role of the ACB as one of the regional and subregional Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centres (TSCCs) in Asia in supporting the implementation of the KMGBF.
“The ACB is deeply grateful to ASEAN Member States for supporting its role as a TSCC. We look forward to collaborating with them and other subscribed countries to bolster technical capacities and complement National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) aligned with the ASEAN Biodiversity Plan (ABP) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF),” Dr. Montemayor added.
The AMS, with support from the ASEAN Secretariat and the ACB, deliberated on and agreed to a consolidated ASEAN message to strengthen its unified position in preparation for the biodiversity conference. The AJS covers the region’s steadfast commitment to implementing the KMGBF, reaffirming ASEAN’s longstanding priorities for the conservation, restoration and resilience of ecosystems, biodiversity mainstreaming and sustainable use, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilisation of genetic resources, including digital sequence information and associated traditional knowledge.
