SESSION 1 Monday, 8 March 2021, 15:00 – 17:00 (Manila/Kuala Lumpur time)
This session was conducted by Sue Stolton, Nigel Dudley and Marc Hockings and introduced best practices in using the METT to improve effective management.
The session started with a short opening review of the importance of protected area management effectiveness and the various tools and standards available, with a focus on the METT and IUCN’s Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas. The rest of the session reviewed the new METT-4 specifically through the focus of the best practices in implementing the METT 1 and covered four main sections:
- Understanding and preparing for using the METT
- Using the multiple-choice sections of the METT properly
- Using the METT to improve management effectiveness
- Developing a good METT process
The session finished with a quick introduction to downloading and saving the METT-4 Excel workbook, which was the focus on the second session.
SESSION 2 Tuesday, 8 March 2021, 15:00 – 17:00 (Manila/Kuala Lumpur time)
This session was conducted by Marc Hockings and ran as a demonstration of the METT-4 Excel workbook.
All participants were provided with the Excel workbook in advance so that they can practice the completion of the Excel sheets in real time and raise any questions or issues as they arise. Ideally, participants should have prepared for the session by selecting in advance a protected area that they know well so that they can use this as the example that they use to learn about the use of the Excel workbook. The full Excel workbook was not completed during this session as this would take too long but participants were encouraged to complete this sample assessment as an example prior to the follow up feedback session to be held at a later date.
