ASEAN countries join world biodiversity meet in Bonn, Germany
Member Countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are now in Bonn, Germany to participate in the 9th Conference of the Parties (COP 9) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) from 19 to 31 May.
The CBD is the key international instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from use of genetic resources. Currently, there are 190 parties to the Convention, which aims to “promote the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.” ASEAN Member Countries that have ratified the Convention have the obligation to contribute to the reduction of biodiversity loss by 2010.
The Conference of the Parties is the governing body of the Convention,
and advances implementation of the Convention through the decisions it
takes at its periodic meetings.
To prepare for the COP 9 in Bonn, the ASEAN Member Countries met in Manila
on 1-2 May 2008 to review key COP 9 topics that are of common interest
to the region. Organized by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), the
Manila workshop discussed the COP 9 issues on agricultural and forest
biodiversity; island and marine/coastal areas biodiversity; biodiversity
and climate change; and issues on incentive measures and access and benefits
sharing; programme of work in protected areas; technology transfer, strategic
plans and clearinghouse mechanisms; and monitoring, assessment and indicators.
The ACB is participating in the Bonn meeting. Executive Director Rodrigo Fuentes and Networking, Partnership and Resource Mobilization Director Wisnu Rosariastoko are scheduled to meet with Dr. Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the CBD Secretariat, to discuss collaboration between the two institutions in strengthening the capacity of ASEAN Member Countries to meet their obligations to the CDB. ACB will also host a Side Event on 22 May, the International Day for Biodiversity. The side event will discuss the critical role of the ASEAN region in the global biodiversity conservation efforts and promote international collaboration in saving the region’s highly threatened biodiversity.
