ACB and SCBD cooperate to strengthen ASEAN efforts to protect rich biodiversity
The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) are collaborating to help strengthen the capacity of Member Countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to comply with their commitments to the international Convention on Biological Diversity and strengthen ASEAN’s efforts to protect its dwindling biodiversity resources.
The two international bodies signed a Memorandum of Agreement that will enable them to conduct joint programmes in the areas of biodiversity research, capacity building and training, public education and awareness, exchange of information, policy development and coordination, and technical and scientific cooperation for the conservation and sustainable development of biodiversity in Southeast Asia. The collaboration between SCBD and ACB will contribute to the strengthening of ASEAN Member Countries’ capacity to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The agreement, signed at the Singapore Botanic Garden Function Hall on 14 January 2008, coincided with the opening of the five-day Regional Workshop for South, Southeast and East Asia on Capacity Building on National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans. SCBD Executive Secretary Dr. Ahmed Djoghlaf and ACB Executive Director Rodrigo U. Fuentes signed the agreement. Mr. Roger de Backer, Head of Operations, Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines was among the dignitaries who witnessed the signing ceremony.
ACB Executive Director Rodrigo Fuentes said the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement comes at a propitious time as ASEAN countries prepare to meet their commitments to the 2010 global biodiversity challenge.
“The collaboration between ACB and SCBD will help strengthen ASEAN efforts on policy articulation that integrates biodiversity with development concerns, particularly poverty reduction,” Executive Director Fuentes said.
He added that the Memorandum of Cooperation with SCBD will enable ACB
to further strengthen its role as an international institution established
by the Governments of ASEAN Member Countries to create, promote, and develop
links with the public, private sector, civil society, international development
institutions, and donor community for the sustainable use of biodiversity
in the ASEAN region.
