ACB and SCBD cooperate to strengthen ASEAN efforts to protect rich biodiversity

The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) will sign a Memorandum of Cooperation to strengthen the capacity of Member Countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to comply with their commitments to the international Convention on Biological Diversity and strengthen ASEAN’s efforts to protect its dwindling biodiversity resources.

The signing ceremony, to be held at the Singapore Botanic Garden Function Hall on January 14, 2008, will coincide with the opening of the five-day Regional Workshop for South, Southeast and East Asia on Capacity Building on National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans. Signatories will be SCBD Executive Secretary Dr. Ahmed Djoghlaf and ACB Executive Director Rodrigo U. Fuentes.

The Convention on Biological Diversity, concluded at Rio de Janeiro on June 5, 1992, is the key international instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from use of genetic resources.

Under the agreement, SCBD and ACB will conduct joint programs in the areas of biodiversity research, capacity building and training, public education and awareness, exchange of information, policy development and coordination, and technical and scientific cooperation for the conservation and sustainable development of biodiversity in Southeast Asia. The collaboration between SCBD and ACB will contribute to the strengthening of ASEAN Member Countries’ capacity to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity.

ACB Executive Director Rodrigo Fuentes said the Memorandum of Cooperation with SCBD will enable ACB to further strengthen its role as an international institution established by the Governments of ASEAN Member Countries to create, promote, and develop links with the public, private sector, civil society, international development institutions, and donor community for the sustainable use of biodiversity in the ASEAN region.
