AWGNCB holds special meeting to assist ACB in work planning for 2008-2009
The ASEAN Working Group on Nature Conservation and Biodiversity (AWGNCB) held a special meeting on 28-29 February 2008 in Manila to provide technical oversight in the preparation of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity’s 3rd Annual Work Plan 2008- 2009 and 2nd Progress Report 2007-2008.
The meeting was presided by Dr. Kasemsun Chinnavaso, Secretary-General, Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment, Thailand, and the newly appointed Chairperson of the AWGNCB. In attendance were from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Viet Nam, and representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat.
ACB Executive Director Rodrigo U. Fuentes said the inputs provided by the AWGNCB members were vital to the crafting of a comprehensive plan to ensure efficient and effective operations of ACB as a centre of excellence.
“The new work plan will continue the full operations phase of the Centre that started last January 2007, and defines ACB’s agenda until 2010. The Centre remains committed to its mandate of functioning as a regional institution that harnesses stakeholders from both public and private sectors, guided by multi-disciplinary perspectives in addressing biodiversity issues in the region. The strategic thrusts of ACB are anchored mainly in its institutional documents, logical framework, and the programme areas for nature conservation and biodiversity of the Vientiane Action Programme (VAP). Emerging issues are also considered in light of their implications and strong interface with the sustainable use of biological resources,” explained Director Fuentes.
