Philippines to Host the Regional Workshop on Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) on 27-30 November 2007

The Philippines will host the forthcoming Regional Workshop on Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) from 27 – 30 November 2007 at Club Paradise, Coron, Palawan, Philippines. The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) and the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will jointly conduct the said workshop.

CCAs have been defined as “natural and modified ecosystems, including significant biodiversity, ecological services and cultural values, voluntarily conserved by indigenous peoples and local and mobile communities through customary laws or other effective means”. This new understanding has prompted the international conservation community to include CCAs as one of the governance types for protected areas. In this respect, governments were encouraged to recognize CCAs as legitimate and important conservation tools and are central to the concept of good governance.

The main objective of the workshop is to help the participants gain a basic understanding on governance of protected areas; share best practices and experiences from various types of CCAs; and develop an action plan to recognize and further strengthen CCAs in the region.

The target participants shall be representatives from the governments of each ASEAN member country handling biodiversity conservation and accredited non-government organizations from the respective countries.
