In 2004, the ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN) endorsed the Vientiane Action Plan (VAP). ACB, as an inter-governmental organization of the ASEAN, pursues its research programmes in support of the priority areas of cooperation on nature conservation and biodiversity in consonance with the VAP.

Pursuant to the Governing Board decision in January 2008, ACB is issuing the Guidelines for the Availment of Technical Assistance (TA) Resources for Joint Research Programmes on Biodiversity in support of AMS.

Introduction

The forests of the Northwestern Panay Peninsula are found within the municipal boundaries of Nabas, Malay and Buruanga of Aklan Province and Libertad of Antique Province. Northwest Panay is considered as one of the last remaining original vegetation in the Island, which is part of a biogeographic region (Panay-Negros) that was once a Pleistocene island.

Introduction


Effects of forest fragmentation on mammals in tropical rainforest habitats were studied from 2001 to 2003 on the southwestern part of Negros Island in the province of Negros Occidental, where scattered forest fragments of varying areas at elevations of 100 – 300 meters above sea level were earlier identified. The study site contains scattered fragments of limestone and non-limestone forests of varying sizes at elevations ranging from 100 to 300m asl. Caves and rock crevices are also abundant in these limestone forests.

Introduction

Among the many islands in Indonesia, Sulawesi Island is inhabited by the highest percentage number of endemic fish species, 76% of 68 species, most of which are living in lakes. Lake Poso in the Central Sulawesi province and Lakes of Malili Complex at South Sulawesi province are among the five big tectonic lakes in Indonesia, with relatively many endemic fish species. Matano is the deepest lake in Asia, showing cryptodepression condition, that is, its bottom is lower than sea level.

Beneficial hymenopteran groups in the buffer zone of Cuc Phuong National Park were surveyed and the conservation importance of the social bees and wasps and the hymenopteran parasitoids of the families Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, and Scelionidae were also explained to the communities within and around the Park.
