OBJECTIVES

The Session on Networking of Marine Protected Areas: Benefits, Good Practices, Standards, and Next Steps is intended to provide a venue to build cooperation and harmonization across various initiatives, strategies, action plans, and working partnerships in MPA networking that have been developed or are being developed in the region.

Specifically, the Workshop aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • highlight the benefits of managing MPAs as a network;
  • showcase good practices and lessons learned in networking of MPAs; and
  • develop recommendations for partnership/collaborative efforts in managing MPA networks for submission and consideration by national governments as represented by the Ministerial Forum.

SESSION OVERVIEW

In line with the 2009 Congress’ theme: “Partnerships at Work: Local Implementation and Good Practices”, the convenors recognize that many effective MPAs are locally managed and that MPA networks provide a supporting role to the individual MPAs. To generate participative discussion in line with this topic, Mr. Rodrigo U. Fuentes, Executive Director, ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, Philippines will co-chair the session together with Dr. Theresa Mundita S. Lim, Director, Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, Philippines.
