Biodiversity and Climate Change Project – Communication Strategy Workshop

6 - 7 December 2011, Los Baños, Laguna

Background

The Federal Republic of Germany, through the GIZ, is supporting the Biodiversity and Climate Change Project. The initiative aims to enhance the capacity of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) in providing ASEAN Member States (AMS) with advisory services on strategies and instruments for biodiversity conservation-related intervention measures on climate protection and adaptation to climate change. The core programme includes the development, validation and dissemination of innovative instruments among AMS.

The project will have an additional focus, which will include the elaboration and implementation of regional and national strategies to appropriately address the interface between biodiversity on the one side, and sustainable development and climate change on the other side. To address this, the project needs to enhance the existing ACB Communication Strategy to include communication measures on sustainable development and climate change as well as the special needs of women and youth. To be called the ACB-BCCP Communication Strategy, the new document will build upon the efforts and experiences of ACB and will serve as basis for a regional (ASEAN) communication strategy for biodiversity and climate change.

For this purpose, a two-day workshop will be conducted on 6 - 7 December 2011 in Los Baños, Laguna.

Objectives of the Workshop

The objectives of the workshop are:

1. To develop an ACB-BCCP Communication Strategy with focus on biodiversity and climate change;

2. To draft a calendar of strategic and gender-sensitive communication activities for the duration of the BCCP;

3. To develop a monitoring and evaluation mechanism for the communication strategy; and,

4. Plan for the regional workshop scheduled for 2012 wherein AMS will craft a regional communication strategy for biodiversity and climate change.

Participants

The workshop will be attended by the ACB-GIZ Technical Working Group on BCCP, staff of the ACB Communication and Public Affairs Unit, information officers/staff of GIZ in Manila, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) information officers (head of DENR public affairs and information officer of the DENR-Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau), and representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat, media, communication students, and NGOs.
