ACB to co-organize international conference-workshop on biodiversity and climate change in Southeast Asia

19-20 February 2008, Manila, Philippines

The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) has joined the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) in organizing an international conference workshop on Biodiversity and Climate Change on 19-20 February 2008 in Manila, Philippines. This was announced by ACB Executive Director Rodrigo U. Fuentes. The conference workshop is also being supported by the World Agroforestry Centre and the Bioversity International.

The conference-workshop aims to provide a venue for an international discussion of opportunities for adapting to and mitigating climate change, while enhancing the conservation of biodiversity in the region.

A keynote paper will present the regional and global perspectives on biodiversity conservation and climate change and their relation to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Two thematic papers will introduce and set the tone of each session of the conference, namely: (1) Biodiversity: Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptations to Climate Change; and (2) The Role of Biodiversity in Mitigating Climate Change. Discussion papers will present particular cases or examples of best practices in each participating country along the two themes. The donor’s perspective in supporting research and development efforts on biodiversity and climate change in the region will be shared by representatives of the donor community.

The expected outputs of the conference-workshop are: policy recommendations and other possible researchable areas on the interface of biodiversity and climate change; a network of experts and cooperators who could assist in developing the regional programme and implementing it in the future; and a concept note for a Regional Programme on Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Change in SEA.
